Students sign their names to the Spread the Word to End the Word pledge poster during lunch in support of the campaign to no longer use the derogatory words "retard" or "retarded." Members of the Mater Dei volleyball team acted as ambassadors for the national campaign and created a presentation with video and information on the campaign and presented it to the other students during Religion classes. At the team's last home game, team members raised awareness by asking the fans in the stands to take the R-word pledge: "I pledge and support the elimination of the derogatory use of the R-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities."
